A huge thank you to author Judy Bruce Brand for her donation to KidZAid of 10 copies of her book “What’s Aids Mom?”
KNOWLEDGE IS PROTECTION AGAINST AIDS
“What’s Aids Mom?” is aimed at 9 – 12 year olds, to inform them about HIV /AIDs. It’s written in a story form with delightful illustrations by Merewyn de Heer. The story is told in a sensitive but scientific way and explains that everyone can get the virus, but it can be prevented. It helps to remove the myths about the disease as well as the stigma and prejudice.
Extract:
Knowledge about Aids is the only sure protection and this marvellous book should be essential reading for the concerned and responsible parent.
Judy Bruce Brand’s book was published in 2000 to coincide with the Aids conference held in Durban. With no cure for Aids, it is as relevant in 2021, particularly as the grim reality of Aids has been somewhat overshadowed by the focus on the Covid pandemic.
Note from the Author
Judy Bruce Brand | Since parents are the prime educators I felt that there could be no better way to teach young children about a sensitive subject than ‘at their mother’s knee’. I hoped that by providing basic scientific facts within a trusting parent-child relationship I might avoid shattering the illusions of young people. I also wanted to engender an understanding and empathy towards those who have been infected with HIV. I trust that reading this story to your child or children might help you to deal with one of the harshest realities of the modern world. I also hope that it might be a useful springboard for you, as the best teacher of all, to raise the ali-important issue of sexual morality.” |
