Community Outreach Center: ECDs

KidZAid is involved with the Early Childhood-development Centres at Luganda, Thornwood, Zwelibomvu and Kwadengezi.

An Early Childhood Development (ECD) center is a place where young children, usually from birth to around six years old, go to learn and grow before they start formal school. These centers provide a safe environment where kids can play, learn basic skills like counting and the alphabet, and develop socially by interacting with other children. ECD centers also often provide meals and care, helping to support the overall well-being of the children. The goal is to help them get ready for school and build a strong foundation for their future learning.
Each morning, siblings bring the preschoolers to the EDC. All the children receive a meal. The older siblings then head off to school while the little ones are cared for by a “Mother” and one or two helpers, known as “Aunties.” After school, all the children receive another meal.

Later, all the children return home—some to households where a parent, often a single parent, comes home from work, and others, unfortunately, to child-headed households.

Smiling, happy faces tell a story of hope and perseverance. KidZAid salutes the Mothers and Aunties who change nappies, help with homework, offer love and encouragement, and make a difference for those fortunate enough to be in a EDC.
