Candyfloss Crèche at Mariannridge Methodist Church

Nestled on the grounds of Mariannridge Methodist Church, CandyFloss Crèche cares for 17 children between the ages of 3 and 5.  This nurturing environment is a lifeline for many families who need to work during the day and therefore cannot be present for their young children. With most children attending nearby government schools, the crèche fills a crucial gap, providing a safe and stimulating space for early childhood development.

Support from KidZAid

Candyfloss Creche is KidZAid’s most recent supported program. KidZAid donates money to be used in feeding the children and ensuring the children are well-nourished. When available, extra books, blankets and clothes are donated. Additionally, when available, extra funds may be donated to the creche based on their needs. Thanks to KidZAid, a new jungle gym has brought endless joy to the children, offering them a safe and fun place to play and grow. KidZAid also donated two different Bookdash books to each child to be able to take home with them.

A Day at Candyfloss Preschool

Open from 6 AM to 5 PM, the crèche welcomes children who travel from various locations. The little ones are primarily English and Zulu speaking and learn in both. Elaine, one of the dedicated teachers, leads the 3 and 2 R classes, offering a curriculum that mirrors a real school setting, complete with meals and engaging activities.

The daily schedule is thoughtfully designed to foster holistic development:

  • Morning: The day begins with Christian songs and a Bible story, instilling values and a sense of community.
  • Learning: Children then dive into lessons on counting and the alphabet, followed by creative sessions of painting and arts and crafts.
  • Recreation: After a snack, outdoor playtime allows the children to expend energy and develop social skills.
  • Meals and Rest: Lunch is followed by a toilet break and nap time, ensuring the children are well-rested and ready for more activities.

As the day winds down and children leave at different times, the dedication of the staff remains unwavering until the doors close at 5 PM.

Community and Activities

Throughout the year, children participate in fun activities such as Valentine’s Day celebrations, Sports Day, and dress-up days. A highlight is the trip to Phezulu Village in June, where they learn about different cultures and their own heritage. Grandparents’ Day fosters intergenerational bonding, adding to the children’s sense of belonging and love.

Parental involvement is also highly encouraged, with term assessments and reports keeping them informed of their child’s progress. Strong interaction is facilitated through chat groups, creating a two-way street of communication and support.
